Plas Deck answers
Where is the product made?
A: The product is extruded in Ohio.
Is PlasDECK a new product?
A: No. it is actually a variation of a flexible PVC that has been used as base cove molding in commercial kitchens for many years. Our non-skid deck material has become an added option on many famous name boat manufactures. A reference list can be provided. PlasDECK is also on many vessels.
What is the price?
A: The price varies depending on the complexity of the deck area. A simple square area will cost less than an area with many hatches, cleats, railings, stairs, etc. to work around. A deck with margin boards takes longer to manufacture, so it will cost more than a deck without margin boards.
What are the panels made of?
A: The panels are made from flexible PVC. The oils in the plastic are non-migrating. Additives for UV protection and anti-fungal agents are included.
How wide are the planks of PlasDECK?
A: The planks, including the caulk line, are two inches wide. Margin board strips are 2 ¾ inches or they can be a customized.
How is PlasDECK attached to a deck?
A: PlasDECK is attached with a one-part urethane-epoxy glue made by Bostik. The marine glue is applied with a trowel. The deck is applied, then any bubbles are rolled out with a floor roller in the direction of the caulk lines. Certified PlasDECK installers are trained to lay the lines straight and glue cleanly to ensure quality does not suffer. We want your deck to look good for a long time.
How does PlasDECK compare to Flexiteek?
A: Flexiteek has a dry teak look. PlasDECK has fresh oiled or wet look that resembles real wood graining. PlasDECK maintains constant even color in its extrusion process, unlike some of its competitors.
How resilient is PlasDECK?
A: PlasDECK will not dent from a blow to the deck by a heavy object such as an air tank or heavy tool. Heavy foot traffic is not a problem.
Does PlasDECK look like cork?
A: Not at all! A close-up view does not reveal the material to be a composite PVC because of the teak “look and texture.”
What is "non-migrating"?
A: All plastics have oil or plasticizers in them. Usually these oils are free to move and will migrate to the surface, top or bottom. When they get to the surface and get washed away, the plastic dries out and becomes brittle. If the surface is the bottom and the oils meet the glue they can compromise the bond. The formulation of PlasDECK keeps the oils locked in place so it will retain its adhesion, stain resistance and flexibility throughout its life.
How much UV protection does it have?
A: PlasDECK contains the highest UV protection available. Rated as automotive grade, it’s mixed through the material.
Is the product slippery when wet?
A: No. PlasDECK has a sure foot grip when wet, which is better than teak or non-skid fiberglass areas.
What kind of surfaces will PlasDECK be put over?
A: The Bostik glue will bond to wood, fiberglass, steel and aluminum. It will also bond to epoxies or fillers used to level or repair the sub-surface.
Does the caulking come in different colors?
A: Our PlasDECK caulking can be either off-white or black.
What is a refit?
A: After eight months or less, teak wood starts turning grey or may warp. When it has to be removed for new teak wood, this job is called a refit. No refits are necessary with PlasDECK.
Is PlasDECK hot?
A: PlasDECK is very close to the same temperature as real teak wood. You can hose down the deck as you would with any teak or fiberglass deck without the worry of slipping. Plus Deck is developing new cooler product now.
Can I install the deck myself? Is it a “do-it-yourself” product?
A: PlasTEAK does offer a do-it-yourself tongue and groove system with this product. Additional tips and instructions for this method are available online or can be mailed to you. However, we recomend that you have it professionally installed.
How does the product arrive at my boat?
A: If you choose the do-it-yourself installation, the material is shipped to you as rolls in boxes, shipped by parcel or on a pallet by truck. If you chose to go with a certified installer, its team will arrive at your boat to make a template of the area to be covered. The panels will be custom finished and sent by parcel or truck or the installer may bring them when they come to install.
How heavy is PlasDECK?
A: Lighter than teak. The weight spec is only 1.3 pound per square foot. Thus, a 100-square-foot area weighs 130 pounds. PlasDECK is ¼-inch thick.
What is a margin board?
A: Along the perimeter of a panel, a border strip can be added for a classic look. Originally, the teak boards needed the end-grain protected so the decks were framed with margin boards that are a bit wider than the ribs. Because PlasDECK is a plastic, this is not necessary but it does give a classic look.
Does the non-skid have to be ground off?
A: No. It is suggested that any shiny fiberglass be “scuffed up” or lightly sanded with 60 grit sandpaper to allow better adhesion.
How do I care for the deck after it is on my boat?
A: Routine cleaning, as with any living area, will keep your deck looking its best. PlasDECK may be pressure cleaned with a smaller power washer about 1200 - 1500psi. DawnTM dish soap and water is effective. Never bleach. Never use acetone. Painting or coating with sealants is not necessary and will void the five-year manufacturer warranty. PlasDECK is not a veneer; light manual sanding may be needed to remove any marks left after washing. PlasDECK is low maintenance, never turning grey.
Is there any warranty on PlasDECK synthetic teak decks?
A: There is a five-year warranty on the PlasDECK material by PlasDECK Inc. Design-A-Deck warranties all installations for two years.
